Professor Samuel Asagba, who recently became the Vice Chancellor of Delta State University at Abraka (DELSU), has shared his plans for the university’s future.

He believes that he will position the organization as the top preference for both people from Delta State and other Nigerians.

On Wednesday, Professor Asagba announced during a press conference about the upcoming 17th Convocation Ceremony taking place at the auditorium of the Faculty of Management Sciences, located at Site 3 in Abraka, Delta State.

He stated that his leadership aims to transform the institution into a hub of academic brilliance and a nurturing environment for strong ethical values, free from issues like cult activities, exam cheating, inappropriate behavior, violent acts, and other societal wrongdoings.

In my vision for Delta State University in Abraka, I envision campuses that are both well-developed and visually appealing, providing a comprehensive and serene setting. The academic programs should cultivate graduates who possess practical skills aligned with current societal demands,” he stated firmly.

Professor Asagba reiterated his dedication to supplying sufficient physical and structural resources to improve educational activities, emphasizing robust research efforts aimed at enhancing the university’s standing both nationally and internationally.

“The institution will possess credibility along with the ability to raise funds from internal and external sources to supplement governmental allocations—a university that promotes healthy and friendly relations with the private sector and sustains connections with fellow institutions in Nigeria and overseas, as well as international organizations focused on educational financing,” he expressed enthusiastically.

The Vice Chancellor added that the university would be ICT-driven and committed to building strong relationships with the host community and other stakeholders.

He pledged not to derail from the vision of the founding fathers, which was to promote the advancement of learning throughout the state and Nigeria, and to provide opportunities for liberal education to all, irrespective of race, creed, or gender.

“The founding fathers of Delta State University aimed to advance knowledge, wisdom, and understanding through teaching and research, with the ultimate purpose of serving humanity,” he affirmed.

He stated that, having served in several key roles within the university, he remains committed to contributing to its growth and development.

“As a former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), former Provost of Asaba Campus, former Dean, former Head of Department, and a Professor of Biochemistry for 14 years, I have keenly followed and contributed to DELSU’s growth. I have dreams that will build on the vision of the founding fathers, the genuine foundations laid by past administrations, and the outstanding achievements of the present leadership,” he said.

He emphasised that his mission includes revenue generation and prudent fund management, stating that government allocations alone are insufficient to realise his vision.

He, therefore, hinted that additional funds would be raised through tuition and other student fees to accelerate the university’s growth and development.

Professor Asagba emphasized tactics designed to boost graduate employment rates as well as enhance the quality of education for both undergraduates and postgraduates, focusing on enriching academic material and preparing students for their future careers.

He stated that the university’s research facilities would undergo improvements, acknowledging their crucial part in boosting the institution’s reputation and appearance.

Concerning institutional rankings, the Vice Chancellor mentioned that concerted efforts were underway to enhance global competitiveness and ensure that both academic and administrative functions adhered to international standards and best practices.

He pointed out that the university would link up with the international academic sphere via multiple Commonwealth programs, providing both brief and extended sponsorship chances for faculty members and learners alike.

He also disclosed that his leadership would promote the utilization of information and communication technologies by improving the university’s ICT facilities, which will allow DELSU to be competitive internationally, offer contemporary and captivating educational opportunities, and facilitate pioneering research and development.

As per his view, infrastructure development—which includes facilities like water supply and electricity—is essential for the smooth operation of the university.

He mentioned that the organization will involve various stakeholders, including external parties like the government, host communities, and alumni, along with internal groups such as campus unions, to promote institutional development.

He reaffirmed his steadfast dedication to employee well-being, career growth, individual strength, orderliness, harmony, and safety—elements crucial for the advancement of the university.

He committed to involving all parties concerned in reaching his goals, based on the fundamental principles of capability, honesty, openness, fairness, and responsibility.
