Suspected militants from the Islamic State in the Sahel Province (ISSP), known locally as Lakurawa, carried out a fatal attack on Wednesday morning in Kalenjini, which is the home town of Tangaza Local Government Chairman, Isa Kalenjini.

Witnesses stated that the attackers entered the area soon after the chairman departed from his home, leading to speculation that he might have been the intended target. Locals verified that the chairman barely avoided the assault.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufa’i, said a joint security operation was quickly mobilized in response. The team is currently pursuing the attackers in the nearby Tangaza forest.

“Some of the stolen animals have been found after the gunmen withdrew into the woods,” Rufai said.

Attempts to reach Chairman Isa Kalenjini for comment were not successful, as his phone was not answered when this report was filed.

The most recent assault comes after a comparable event on Tuesday, April 22, in Saminaka village within the same district of Tangaza. In this earlier strike, gunmen fired randomly, resulting in the death of one villager named Salihu Isiyaku Hamza and leading to the theft of various animals such as sheep, camels, and cows. Following their violent actions, the assailants retreated towards the nearby Gohono forest.

Hamza was laid to rest following Islamic traditions, with his mourning family and community members taking part in the burial process.

The back-to-back assaults have heightened tensions across Tangaza Local Government Area, sparking renewed calls for strengthened security in the region.
