On Wednesday, the Federal Government formally launched the Presidential Initiative for Youth Empowerment in Agriculture, referred to as “The Green Money Project”.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Abiodun Yinusa, who serves as the Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Agriculture, stated that this project will act as a key strategy.

Yinusa stated that this initiative would capitalize on Nigeria’s farming capabilities by supporting young people and utilizing the nation’s abundant resources along with various unexplored prospects within the industry.

He also said that the initiative was in line with Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security.

”It complements the ongoing efforts of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, while encouraging collaboration among key stakeholders to involve youth more actively in agriculture,” he said.

Yinusa highlighted the country’s issues as including joblessness, poverty, lack of food security, and the long-standing inadequate use of the agricultural sector among young people in Nigeria.

He restated the pledge of Tinubu’s government to support and encourage young people in taking a pivotal role in revolutionizing agriculture.

Aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and addressing the nation’s urgent call for food security, this program seeks to uplift young Nigerians via advancements in agriculture.

The initiative aims to attract, educate, and assist young people by providing them with expertise in contemporary agricultural methods, machinery use, sustainable farming approaches, and digital tools.

“The program will be rolled out at chosen universities, youth development centers, and technical colleges throughout the country, aiming to help achieve zero hunger in Nigeria,” he stated.

Mr Charles Folayan, the Project Coordinator, stated that the initiative centered around data enhancement, skill development, resource provision, mentoring, and market entry opportunities.

During his comments, Professor Olushola Kehinde, the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, showed gratitude to the Presidency for selecting the university as one of the collaborating institutions.

Kehinde referred to the initiative as both well-timed and highly effective.

The vice chancellor showed confidence that this collaboration would greatly boost the university’s capabilities in food production and value chain enhancement.
