Last week, an appeals court in Tangier decreased the jail terms for four teenagers who were found guilty in a widely publicized attack case that involved a young woman near the city’s harbor.
The Criminal Appeals Chamber reduced the original three-year jail terms to two years for each of the four teenagers. While upholding their convictions, the court altered the duration of the sentences.
Initially, the teenagers were accused of offenses such as assaulting a woman using force and taking part in the incident. Additionally, two of these individuals were facing allegations linked to consuming drugs. Since their apprehension, they have remained in detention.
The case gained widespread attention last July after a video surfaced online showing a group assault on a girl along the Tangier Corniche, sparking public outrage.
The investigation found that the victim was probably a visitor exploring the city. Nonetheless, officials could not officially confirm her identity, nor did she show up at the court hearings.
