Bhubaneswar (Odisha), India, April 23 (ANI): Chennaiyin FC suffered a crushing 4-0 loss against Mumbai City FC during the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 round-of-16 match on Wednesday. Despite putting up a strong fight throughout both halves, the Marina Machans conceded late goals that went against their efforts, resulting in their elimination at the Kalinga Stadium.

Head coach Owen Coyle opted for an offensive lineup for the match. In midfield, playmaker Connor Shields joined forces with Jiteshwor Singh, accompanied by Irfan Yadwad and Lukas Brambilla on either flank. At the forefront, Wilmar Jordan Gil and Daniel Chima Chukwu formed a dual-striker setup, according to a statement released by Chennaiyin FC.

At the outset, Elsinho made a crucial tackle just moments into the match following kickoff. However, when the Marina Machans strongly protested for a handball within the opposing team’s penalty area, the referee dismissed their claims. Hoping to contribute another goal to his tally of eight from previous tournaments, Jordan Gil attempted a shot six minutes in but sent it directly towards the keeper.

In the Chennaiyin goal area, Mohammad Nawaz prevented an opposing player from getting past him following a move initiated within 13 minutes. Just three minutes afterward, he deflected a powerful shot away with his gloves for added security. As Shields orchestrated plays deep in their territory, Chima Chukwu and Jordan barely missed scoring with close-range header attempts. Meanwhile, Jiteshwor and Vignesh Dakshinamurthy aimed shots high as Chennaiyin took control of the game.

In the 43rd minute, Mumbai went ahead thanks to a headed goal from Nikolaos Karelis. After halftime, Chennaiyin regrouped and pressed hard for an equalizer. They nearly managed it in the 48th minute when both Brambilla and Jordan had shots cleared off the line consecutively.

Chennaiyin maintained a high level of intensity as they pursued the equalizer. Irfan put the goalkeeper to the test with a header from a corner kick, whereas Jordan’s somersaulting shot narrowly missed the target shortly afterward.

The appeals for a handball within the penalty area made by The Marina Machans were dismissed just after the hour mark. Subsequently, Mumbai extended their lead despite not being dominant in possession, with Lallianzuala Chhangte finding the back of the net. Later in the match, Chhangte secured his second goal for Mumbai, making it three-nil. Finally, Bipin Singh concluded the game with a score, sealing the victory for Mumbai. (ANI)
