Kwabena Mintah Akandoh
In a recent announcement, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) criticized the Ministry of Health’s Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for dismissing the CEO of Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Atiku Adam, along with several others, labeling these acts as unfair and misuse of authority.
The organization showed support for the affected medical staff and urged accountability and restraint from public officials.
“The way this dismissal was handled is a violation of proper procedures and misuse of authority by the Honorable Minister of Health. In light of these ongoing wrongdoings, the GMA expresses its support for our fellow employees,” the statement read.
The organization criticized the airing of a recent patient’s death at the facility, referring to it as “media scrutiny.” They argued that this violated patient privacy, leaving the hospital vulnerable to potential lawsuits and skewing public perception.
In the declaration, the GMA stated that the leader of the Emergency Unit has faced threats and experienced cyberbullying, putting their personal safety and psychological well-being at risk.
These actions, if they persist, could lead to the devaluation of dedicated employees and diminish public trust in the healthcare system,” the GMA stated, reaffirming the importance of thorough investigations rather than engaging in public finger-pointing.
The Association also demanded the Minister render an apology from the Minister of Health and the Tamale North MP for what it described as “unwarranted attacks” on the hospital staff.
The organization additionally requested the hospital administration to guarantee adherence to proper procedures in addressing the matter, protecting the well-being of its employees, and offering mental health assistance to individuals impacted.
The GMA restated its dedication to addressing the enduring issues within Ghana’s healthcare system and warned that they are keeping a close eye on developments. They also mentioned their intention to provide guidance to their members whenever needed.
