Srilanka, April 23 — Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha visited Kandy yesterday to inspect ongoing security and welfare arrangements in place for the large crowds attending the sacred Dalada exposition at the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
The exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which began on April 18 under the special directive of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, will continue until April 27. Devotees can view the relics daily from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Thousands of local and international Buddhist pilgrims have been arriving in Kandy each day to participate in this rare religious event-the first of its kind in 16 years.
A 24-hour security and welfare program is being implemented by the tri-forces, Police, and Civil Defence Department, providing essential services such as food, water, first aid, and sanitation to the devotees.
During his inspection, the Defence Secretary reviewed current progress, commended the dedication of security and support personnel, and urged senior officers to continue enhancing the quality of services while minimizing public inconvenience. He also encouraged officials to ensure safe crowd management, especially due to the long queues forming at the venue.
The Defence Secretary extended his gratitude to philanthropists who have contributed to the welfare of pilgrims and underscored the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring the success and sanctity of this significant religious occasion.
He was accompanied by the Commander of the Security Forces Headquarters (Central), the General Officer Commanding of the 11 Division, Senior DIG of the Central Province, and other senior officials from the tri-forces and Police.
