Embrace Reading, Become Global Citizens: Don Urges Students

Posted on

Students are being encouraged to develop a reading habit to broaden their understanding and grow into globally competitive individuals who can stand toe-to-toe with peers around the world.

At the inaugural matriculation ceremony held on Wednesday at the African School of Economics (ASE) campus in Abuja, Professor Michael Maduagwu, who serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), delivered this warning during the event.

Dr. Maduagwu, who served as the guest speaker at the gathering, presented a talk entitled “Education: The Gateway to Achieving Success.” In his address, he portrayed ASE as an incubator for individuals with a global perspective, stressing that although the web assists in acquiring knowledge, it fails to substitute traditional printed materials effectively.

He urged the new students to be mindful of time and use it effectively and efficiently, all while maintaining high ethical standards and discipline, especially concerning their character development and studies.

Education unlocks every door. It is the crucial tool—without it, progress halts. While some argue that education comes at a cost, consider the price of ignorance instead. Education equips you for life, achievement, and whatever endeavors you pursue. Information abounds, but only through education does one gain access to it.

The internet serves as a means to offer you various resources via platforms like Google. However, it cannot substitute for published materials, be they found online or within a traditional library setting. Through the internet, books become more readily accessible, eliminating the necessity of visiting an actual library building. In the past, failing to step into a physical library meant missing out on specific titles. Yet today, these same books can often be accessed digitally; however, this convenience doesn’t negate the act of reading itself. Instead, downloading, perusing, and preparing from them constitutes the essence.

” Cultivate a habit of reading. The university aims to encourage you to explore various subjects beyond just your field of study. It’s important to read broadly and proactively rather than waiting for guidance from lecturers—try staying ahead of their curriculum. As future global citizens, the broader your knowledge base becomes through extensive reading, the better prepared you’ll be. Additionally, maintaining high ethical standards and self-discipline, particularly in terms of personal conduct and academic pursuits, is crucial. Time management is also key; being aware of how you use time can significantly impact your success. Without respecting deadlines, they may hinder your progress,” stated Professor Maduagwu to Tribune Online.

The Vice-Chancellor at the African School of Economics, Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji, addressed new students during his discussion titled “Three Principles, Six Stories.” He encouraged them to stay focused, build resilience, and foster curiosity. Advising for confidence and adopting an “I can do this” mindset, he emphasized trusting themselves and maintaining hope, noting that their attitudes would significantly influence their professional achievements.

He stated, “As I conveyed during my matriculation speech about the Three Principles and Six Stories, my advice to them is to stay curious, maintain focus, and persevere—since Rome wasn’t constructed overnight.”

Succeeding requires significant dedication and commitment. Having dreams, motivation, and resolve is vital, yet unwavering devotion plays an indispensable role too. Additionally, maintaining discipline is key to achieving success, necessitating the avoidance of distractions whenever feasible.

This is merely the start, and things are off to an impressive beginning. As mentioned even by the founder during his address at Princeton University, they possess every facility needed for achieving greatness. I am confident that ASE has both the potential and ability to guide today’s African youth into tomorrow, which is happening right now. It’s crucial for students to stay diligent since dedication will eventually yield rewards.

In the upcoming five years, ASE will rival prominent institutions within Nigeria’s university landscape. Our student body is highly varied, hailing from various regions across the nation. Similarly, our team of staff and professors brings a wealth of diversity, having come from numerous corners around the globe. This rich mix positions us well to stand toe-to-toe with premier educational establishments here.

We aren’t confining ourselves to just the Nigerian market; instead, we’re aiming for a global stage. Our international collaborators include top-tier universities, and we see no reason why we shouldn’t surpass their achievements thus far.

According to Tribune Online, a total of 44 students were enrolled—23 from the Faculty of Arts, Management, and Social Sciences, 11 from the Faculty of Science and Computing, and 10 from the Faculty of Agriculture, Environmental, and Allied Health Sciences.
