A soccer enthusiast who took his own life shortly after learning about the accusations of racism against him could not bear the shame of possibly facing a suspension or imprisonment, according to what was revealed at an inquest.
Andrew Paul Hewitt, aged 52, was discovered deceased at his residence in Flint, Flintshire, on December 1, 2024.
The following day occurred after he watched a game between Chester FC and their opponents from the National League, Warrington Town, when he reportedly performed a racially offensive hand sign.
A message was discovered at Mr Hewitt’s residence on Palace Close where he genuinely expressed regret over his behavior.
The inquest held at County Hall in Ruthin determined that the cause of death was suicide.
Mr Hewitt, an HGV driver, was a devoted follower of Chester FC and had been supporting the team for over four decades.
However, after the game on November 30, 2024, videos surfaced online showing a “small group” of Chester supporters making derogatory signs toward a Warrington player, according to what was presented at the inquest.
Chester FC issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with the video. They also mentioned that they had identified an individual who would be subject to appropriate actions by law enforcement.
In a statement, Mr. Hewitt’s sibling Alan mentioned that the behavior of the one-time father was “entirely uncharacteristic.”
He stated: “Andrew was swept away by the moment.”
He said his brother likely went through the club’s statement along with the associated online commentary and concluded that he would be facing either an extended suspension or possibly even jail time. This made him “unwilling to endure the shame” of such consequences.
HM Coroner for North Wales John Gittins said: “It is a very tragic loss in very extreme, difficult circumstances.
I can tell that this is a man greatly cherished, and the void he has left behind is exceedingly hard to fill in each of your lives.
