Zamfara State has plunged into a fresh political crisis following the emergence of a parallel House of Assembly formed by 10 lawmakers previously suspended by the current leadership of the state legislature.
A splinter group that met in Gusau on Wednesday gave Governor Dauda Lawal a 30-day deadline to take prompt and significant steps regarding the deteriorating security conditions within the state; otherwise, they threatened to initiate impeachment processes against him.
The legislators, presided over by Bashar Gummi from the Gummi 1 Constituency, dismissed their suspension ordered by Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki, labeling it as “unlawful, unjustified, and driven by political motives.”
They contended that an individual, who was previously impeached by 18 out of 24 members, did not have the authority to suspend others due to lacking credibility.
Following a two-hour meeting, Factional Speaker Gummi stated, “We have instructed the governor to resubmit the 2025 budget within one month. Additionally, we issued a strong warning that he must eliminate all instances of banditry within the same period or risk facing impeachment.”
Lawmakers representing both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party criticized the Lawal administration for its inability to address widespread security issues spanning all 14 local government regions.
They also took issue with the government for supposedly focusing on trivial expenses when issues like poverty, kidnappings, and bandit assaults persistently ravage neighborhoods.
“It is disappointing that the government hasn’t sent sympathizers to visit the victims or their families who were impacted by these assaults,” they mourned.
Attempts to get official responses from the Zamfara State Government and the House of Assembly did not meet with success.
Upon being reached out to, the representative for the state, Mustafa Kaura, chose not to comment and stated, “This matter falls entirely under the purview of the state Assembly. Kindly get in touch with Bello Madaro, who is the spokesperson for the state House of Assembly.”
Efforts to contact Madaro were unsuccessful since his phone was unresponsive up until the publication deadline.
