Accra, April 23, GNA – An agreeable transition plan has been established between the government and Goldfields Ghana Limited concerning the Damang Mine.
The process for transitioning involves granting a new 12-month mining lease to Goldfields’ subsidiary, Abosso Goldfields Limited, with approval from parliament expected in May 2025.
According to a statement released by Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister overseeing Government Communications, on Wednesday, Goldfields will restart open-pit mining throughout the transitional phase.
This would assist in protecting employment and conducting feasibility studies to determine Damang’s reserves and mine lifespan, it stated.
“At the same time, the handling of current reserves will proceed with oversight provided by a collaborative management group comprising delegates from the government of Ghana and Goldfields,” the statement shared with the Ghana News Agency indicated.
It stated: “Both sides will make efforts in sincerity to ensure a smooth transition and final handover of an operational mine to Ghanaian control.”
Both sides concurred on moving forward with earnest talks regarding the extension of the lease for the Tarkwa mine, set to expire in 2027. They also committed to collaborating to boost Ghana’s prospects within the mining industry, aiming to make it an attractive place for investments.
