Bayelsa PDP rejects leadership takeover by Wike’s allies

The Bayelsa State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed claims about a shift in its leadership after the reported disbandment of its State Working Committee headed by Solomon Agwana.

The party rejected assertions about appointing a new caretaker committee led by supporters of Minister Nyesom Wike from the Federal Capital Territory.

On Wednesday, the Publicity Secretary for the Bayelsa PDP, Mr. Ebiye Ogoli, released a statement refuting the reports as untrue and deceptive.

The statement was released following the decision taken by the South-South Zonal Working Committee of the PDP led by Dan Orbih. On Tuesday, this committee declared the dissolution of both the Bayelsa and Edo state executive committees.

The regional committee, convened at the PDP zone headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, listed accusations of significant mismanagement, inadequate performance, and improper handling of internal conflicts as justifications for restructuring.

In the course of the restructuring, George Turnah, who is aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike from the Federal Capital Territory, was named the head of a newly established caretaker committee.

Nevertheless, Ogoli firmly denied these allegations, stating that the term of the zonal executive committee concluded on March 13, 2025.

In order to avoid a leadership void, the National Working Committee of the party previously appointed a caretaker committee headed by the esteemed Chief Emmanuel Ogidi.

The panel was assigned the responsibility of managing the party’s operations until a gathering for the southern region could be organized.

Ogoli stated clearly that the supposed disbandment of the Bayelsa executive by the zonal committee led by Dan Orbih held no legal weight since the zonal executive lacked the constitutional power to dismantle state-level committees.

He pointed out that the Bayelsa State High Court was still considering whether to suspend George Turnah, which made taking any steps concerning his appointment too early.

“We place on record that the zonal exco of the party, even if properly constituted, still lacks the constitutional powers to dissolve a state working committee,” Ogoli said.

The spokesman for the PDP in Bayelsa appealed to party members to ignore efforts by outside influences to disrupt the stability of the organization within the state.

He restated the party’s dedication to backing Governor Senator Douye Diri in his initiatives to transform Bayelsa.

“By 2027, we still have some time ahead of us, and we should not let these diversions distract us from our purpose. It remains our responsibility to keep backing our governor, who has demonstrated genuine patriotism and unwavering commitment to our state,” Ogoli declared.
